“From the Amazon to Antarctica – Extreme vertical adventure”

Local lad Leo Houlding recounts his most recent vertical epics from the lost world of the Amazon to white desert of Antarctica.
Illustrated with world-class photography and film shot by the multi award winning Alastair Lee; prepare to be blown away.

In search of ever greater adventure, 2012 took Leo to the wildest, least accessible and most contrasting corners of Earth.
Cerro Autana is a scared Tepuy deep in the Venezuelan jungle.
Deadly snakes, searing heat, swarms of insects and a terrifying encounter with a shamans blow pipe create a tale Indiana Jones would be proud of.

Ulvetanna, the wolfs tooth in Norwegian is a 4500ft cliff situated in Queen Maud Land a remote, rarely visited area of Antarctica.
It is the hardest summit to reach on the harshest continent.
Temperatures of minus 40, hurricane force winds and a remoteness unlike anywhere else on Earth will surely provide a challenge greater than anything Leo has faced so far?

Leo will have only just landed back in the UK after his attempt on Ulvetanna. Learn more about this awesome mountain and Leo’s ambitious mission on the Berghaus website.

Tickets available from Rheged centre 01768 860000
£12 Adult
£8 Concession (student)

The Peter Sidwell@Rheged Cafe will be open 5pm-7.30pm, book your table and make a night of it.

Natural England, in partnership with FERA (the Food and Environment Research Agency), have temporarily closed the open access land around Holwick Fell, including Holwick Scar, under emergency closure powers as a result of the presence of a damaging plant fungal infection.

Phytophthora austrocedrae (P. austrocedrae) is a damaging plant pathogen (a fungal infection) which has only recently been discovered in Great Britain (the current reported distribution of the infection is limited to Argentina, Chile and now the UK). Its presence has been confirmed in juniper bushes at the Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve (NNR) in the North Pennines.

The pathogen was detected in November 2011 as the cause of dieback in juniper bushes on heathland in the Moor House area of the Nature Reserve in Northern England. It is especially serious because juniper is quite rare in the UK and this site has the second largest population of the species in the UK.

A survey will be carried out of other areas where junipers are growing to establish whether the pathogen is present at other sites in the UK. The devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales have also been alerted so that they can consider carrying out similar surveys.

Current Bird Restrictions 2012

Taken from the FRCC website

Bird restrictions in the Lake District are agreed annually between representatives of the Lake District National Park Authority, the Cumbria Raptor Study Group, Natural England, The British Mountaineering Council and the FRCC.

The BMC is responsible for publicity, and the LDNPA for the erection of signs as well as dealing with issues as the season progresses.

Access & Conservation explains the reasons for the restrictions, how they are decided upon, and gives advice to climbers on what to do if they discover that protected birds are nesting on the crag they are visiting.

Please help maintain access by observing these voluntary Bird Restrictions.

In addition a few other restrictions have been listed, where noted these are voluntary, others are at the whim of the land-owner. In all cases negotiations have been made by the Lake District BMC Area Committee and have either resulted in compromise or stalemate.

These restrictions do work: despite adverse weather, many of the protected sites successfully reared chicks last year. As a result of the co-operation of climbers over the years, restrictions on many of the more popular low level crags have been lifted “unless the birds nest” – this is excellent news for climbers, so please continue to support the restrictions. But please also note, that where a crag is unrestricted this does not mean an automatic right to climb. If you suspect that there is a peregrine nesting on a crag, and it is obviously alarmed by your presence, then you should not climb there. Indeed, if you are aware of birds nesting elsewhere, please telephone National Park Ranger Peter Barron on 017687 79633 or email him at peterbarron@lake-district.gov.uk.

To see the Crags list click here to go to the FRCC Site

If you have any urgent comments on the current restrictions then please email them to the FRCC Guidebook Editor. All such comments should also be emailed to the BMC.
